Lady Harrow’s Mournflight

Fear the eternal scream of dread.

Welcome to my warband review of Lady Harrow’s Mournflight. This is one the two warbands found in the boxset Champions of Dreadfane. You can check out my review of it here. As always thanks to Games Workshop for providing this warband for me to review for free. Now onto the review!

Narrative

Lady Harrow and her Mournflight are Myrmourm Banshees sent out by Nagash to hunt users of magic as well as intruders of Shadespire. After fighting with Stormcast Eternals in the Dreadfane, Lady Harrow and her warriors chased their prey through the barriers between realms and into the Beastgrave where they try to quench an insatiable hunger that can never be satisfied thanks to the cruelty of Nagash.

Miniatures

Lady Harrow’s Mournflight consists of 4 Myrmourn Banshees: Lady Harrow, the Anguished One, the Screaming Maiden and Widow Caitha. Each model features the ethereal banshees armed with ghostly blades and their highly detailed bases. My favourite model from the warband is the Anguished One. I just really like the swooping “S” pose.

The warband comes in spooky green plastic. Miniatures go together fairly easily but just be careful with glueing to the bases as it can be quite fragile.

The Fighters

Lady Harrow’s Mournflight is a 4 fighter warband. Each fighter shares movement 4 (5 when inspired) and 2 dodge characteristics as well as the ability to ignore lethal hexes and being able to move through blocked and occupied hexes which is the same as the Thorns of the Briar Queen warband.

Each fighter inspires after moving through a hex occupied by an enemy fighter. Remember it’s AFTER. Their inspire mechanic is easy and hard at the same time. You have to engage with the opponent to do so but it’s a sure-fire thing which is great. It’s a risky but rewarding inspire condition.

Lady Harrow

Lady Harrow is your leader. She comes in at 4 wounds. Her Ethereal (No)Chill Blade is range 1, 3 fury and 2 damage.

When inspired her blade goes up to 3 damage with Cleave. Quite the damage dealer. She gains a unique reaction that allows to push herself 1 hex after an attack action is declared that doesn’t target her. Great mobility tool.

The Anguished One

The Anguished One has a Piercing (No)Chill Blade which is range 1, 2 fury and 2 damage. She also has a wounds characteristic of 3.

The Anguished One inspired has her Blade go to 3 fury. She gains a unique ability where she ignores your opponent’s crits in defence rolls which is huge really. Just roll a single crit and her attack is guaranteed.

The Screaming Maiden

The Screaming Maiden is armed with a range 1, 2 fury, 2 damage Lethal (No)Chill Blade. She also has only 3 wounds.

The Maiden Inspired goes to 4 fury on her Blade. She gains a unique ability where when she ROLLS A CRIT her attack gains +1 damage. With 4 fury she has a 51.8% chance to ROLL A CRIT. Noice. Enjoy putting Concealed Weapon on her in Relic Format.

Widow Caitha

Widow Caitha has a Wicked (No)Chill Blade which is range 1, 2 fury and 3 damage! She’s also the most fragile with a wounds characteristic of 2.

Widow Caitha inspired goes up to having 3 wounds when inspired. She also a new action which is built-in Hidden Paths. Basically inspire her for extra survivability and mobility.

Cards

Once again we’re at the cards part of the review. As Champions of Dreadfane contains no universal cards it’s faction cards only! I’ll start with what I think it’s okay then my top picks.

Faction Objectives

Bitter Embrace is a Dual objective for 2 glory. You need 2 or more surviving fighters and all of them to be adjacent to enemy fighters. Too difficult to pull off consistently.

Frozen in Place is a 1 glory Surge for when 1 or more enemy fighters have a guard token. Easy but also entirely dependent on your opponent.

Nagash’s Tithe is 1 glory for having more enemy fighters out of action than surviving enemy fighters. Too situational for 1 glory.

Tide of Malice is a situational 2 glory Dual objective. Need 2 or more surviving friendly fighters with all surviving friendly fighters inspired. Easy/hard depending on the matchup.

Faction Objectives – Top Picks

Creeping Dread is a reliable Dual objective that needs 3 or more surviving friendly fighters and them all to have move and/or charge tokens.

Dominion of Death rewards good players with reliable objective decks. Score in the 3rd end phase for 3 glory if you have scored the most objectives. Go first in the 3rd round to easily score this as you will be counting your objectives first. Sneaky but totally legit.

Fleeting Memories is a Surge for moving into 2 or more objectives in a single move action. Very reliable and pretty easy.

Ghostly Torment is an amazing 2 glory Dual objective which requires you to have 2 or more surviving friendly fighters and 2 or more fighters with 1 or more wound tokens. Very easy to score.

Inescapable Hunger requires moving through a blocked hex and ending adjacent to an enemy fighter for 1 Surge glory. Very nice, just always remember to pick a board with blocked hexes!

Nexus of Terror is 2 glory for holding the most objectives. Not easy but great for hold objective players.

One Will is a Dual and Surge objective for holding one or more odd and even objective. I like it, very good.

Spectral Vortex is another 1 glory surge objective when an enemy fighter is the target of your second successful attack action that phase as long as each attack was done successfully by a different fighter. For aggro players but still very good.

Faction Gambits

Chilling Scream is faction No Time. It’s alright.

Shared Agony is nice but just requires a friendly wounded fighter which is more difficult than you realise.

Spectral Grasp reduces enemy movement dependent on the number of friendly fighters out action. Too little fighters to make use of this effectively.

Faction Gambits – Top Picks

Call of the Grave is like Distraction but on steroids. Push a chosen enemy fighter 2 hexes closer towards a desired friendly fighter.

Dissipate is a reaction played before the attack roll that gives your fighter an innate dodge. Combined with the warband’s 2 dodge this almost guarantees survival from attacks excluding those loveable crits.

Echoing Spite lets you attack again after the same friendly range 1 attack action fails. I love it.

Enervating Sorrow is a lovably cruel reaction. Play after an opponent plays a ploy but before it is resolved. They must discard a power card from their hand, if they do not then the ploy is not resolved. So many uses, amazing.

Frightful Aspect is faction Distraction. All of the pushes!

Soaring Spite doubles your move except during a charge. Great for a move of 8 or 10!

Spectral Charge is +1 damage in the next activation, what’s not to love?

Faction Upgrades

Gravesand Glass heals your leader every time a enemy fighter is taken out of action by a gambit or attack action. It’s alright but not what I’d run.

Soul Harvest only has effect when an enemy fighter is out of action. Go on guard then heal for 1. Good but too situational.

Soul Leech is a 50/50 roll to damage an enemy fighter you move through. It’s okay.

Faction Upgrades – Top Picks

Arcane Siphon is amazing. Discard an enemy upgrade within 3 hexes as an action then on a 50/50 roll discard this card. I love guaranteed upgrade removal.

Debilitating Aura is -1 dice to adjacent enemy fighters. Love it especially with 2 dodge fighters.

Hollow Hatred is faction Awakened Weapon that only works once per round with the fighter’s first attack action each time. Limited in use but still amazing.

Maddening Hunger is +1 dice when you charge. Remember in Beastgrave you get a charge token after you complete the move action of a charge action.

Spirit Blade requires an enemy fighter out of action but then gives you the following attack action: range 1, 3 fury, 3 damage and Cleave!

Swooping Dash for all that +2 movement.

Veil of Grief is faction Great Fortitude.

Deck
As there are no universal cards I’ll be doing a single Championship Format event using universal cards from Nightvault and Beastgrave.

Playstyle: Flex (Aggro and Hold Objectives)

This deck builds off of the strong faction cards of Lady Harrow’s Mournflight to make a solid flex warband that can do both aggro and hold objective play. The objectives allow you to quickly shift between aggro and hold objective play. Spectral Wings helps provide boosted movement while the power deck is filled with push cards to manipulate positioning. Regal Vision and Blazing Soul provide immediate inspiring while the rest of the upgrades primarily focus on defence with cards like Spectral Armour and Debilitating Aura.

Warband Overview

Lady Harrow’s Mournflight are a slightly fragile but powerful warband. They require setup and tactical use but once in the correct positions and inspired the warband becomes an unstoppable force. Their strong faction cards help them achieve this. They rarely kill in a single hit but wear down the opponent in rolling aggro.

I definitely recommend picking up Lady Harrow’s Mournflight. They’re nice miniatures and offer new ways to play. If you want to get this warband you can pre-order/buy them direct from Games Workshop here.

That’s all for now. Remember even in the Beastgrave you can’t escape the horrors of Shadespire. Some even don’t care if you can roll crits!

  1. I like these, I’ve been looking for a replacement for my Cursebreakers, and I feel these could be it as I wanna try a different style of play.
Great Article given me plenty of idea for a deck, can’t wait to get them so can start practising and tweaking.

      1. I think playing something more fragile, will help me think more about my positional play more.

I love my Cursebreakers, but there is very little risk in them, especially if you turn Stormsire into a turret, and just blast anyone who gets close.

  2. Just a comment: Chilling Scream is much better than No Time.
Unlike No Time, the Mournflight player can keep playing power cards…

  3. Just one comment about Chilling Scream, which I think you underestimated.
