Kill Team: May 2023 Tournament Stats

Reviewing the global tournament stats for Kill Team in May 2023!

Welcome to the May Stats Show for Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team where I cover all of the global tournament data for Kill Team! Let’s dive into the stats and see how the game has evolved over the last month!

I’ve also done this as a more in-depth YouTube video which you can watch here:

May 2023 Stats

Once again the standard caveats apply for the stats. All collated from BCP (Best Coast Pairings) and events that their TOs have submitted to us. If you don’t use BCP, just contact us with the details and we can add them in! Big thanks, as always, goes to Hotsauceteddy who’s collated all the data and who this wouldn’t be possible without! Remember, if you share the stats and images, just remember to credit him and me as it helps us both out.

May Winrates

Outside of Gellerpox and Troupe being the standard teams now over-performing, they are joined by Fellgor Ravager (le gasp) and Farstalker Kinband (actual gasp). The Beastmen are no surprise, really, but the Kroot are. Maybe they did have a really good month or people were using Kroot to represent Beastmen on the weekend that they were legal for release? It is odd.

Otherwise, the huge swath of bespoke teams sit in the health range, which is good. Vet Guard drop down from last month’s dominance, while Hand of the Archon do much better in May. Novitiates and Breachers also pick up, highlighting that perhaps April was just an unfortunate wobble.

Below 44% we have Pathfinders doing much better at 43%, Hunter Clade oddly dropping down to 42%, Exaction Squad dropping down to 39% with Hearthkyn Salvager and Warpcoven at 37% each which is rough. Especially for the Votann. Exaction Squad actually have their worst month ever as they’ve been mostly hitting above 40% in past months.

For GT+ results, Kroot take a dominant lead while Novitiates also jump up to 63%. Fellgor consistently do well in GT+ too for no real surprise. Once again most of the bespoke teams remain in the health ranges, which is great. Under-performing teams now switch to Legionary at 41%, Hunter Clade down to 38%, Votann at 31%, Starstriders tumbling down to 20% with Exaction at a shocking 10%, although these last 3 teams have really poor usage rates. Still not good signs overall for those 3.

May Game Data

Once again we’re still unable to get podium data due to BCP changes, which is a shame as it makes it harder to examine the stats. Still, we can see that while Intercersion retain their popularity dominance, Kommandos are now the cemented 2nd most popular faction in the game with Legionary demoted to 3rd. Looks like Legionary players have gone to Intercession, Kommandos, or other factions! Most of the bespoke teams have close to 90 games this month or more, which is good. Only Exaction Squad, Hearthkyn Salvager and Warp Coven drop-off at around 40 games.

Bespoke Teams still makeup the majority of games, with only 200 games for compendium teams out of 2,700, which has been a stable trend for a number of months now.

May Global Tournaments

May sees the first month since December 2022 where we’ve had a simultaneous drop for both number of players and events, although this time it’s by a very small margin. Kill Team seems to be maintaining an average of 850 monthly players since January 2023 which is great. May was a quieter month for the game in terms of events so it should pick up with June, even with the new edition of Warhammer 40,000.

May Average Points

I’ll be showing these quarterly going forwards but the new scoring caps seems to have only marginally increased average points on players who win. Points for losing and drawing has actually stayed the same mostly.

May Winrate Chart

This is just the chart breakdown of the winrate bar graphs. Remember green is 55% to 45% which is good, orange is 56% to 60% and 44% to 40% which are warning signs, while above and below either is not good.

Intercession really cement themselves with their popularity. Having 3 teams clearly above 60% is…interesting while Troupe sit just below that threshold. We once again have more bespoke teams sitting at around 40% or lower.

April/May Winrates

Now this is the combined data of April and May which is likely what data Games Workshop will look at when considering changes for the next balance dataslate (due late June). Remember this isn’t a 100% lock-in as GW have their own stats and factor in winrates partly for balance.

For the 60% or greater gang (hilariously sad) we have Troupe and Gellerpox who have had months at 60% or more. Totally fine. Fellgor jump in at 62% but I doubt GW will nerf them based off this result. Next we have Vet Guard at 56%. It is borderline but as we rate draws at 0.5 points instead of 1, this score could be higher on GW’s stats.

For teams below 44% (due to the draw scores I just mentioned), we have Warp Coven at 41%, Exaction Squad at 41%, Pathfinders at 41% and Votann at 37%. Votann will unlikely get any changes but please no Pathfinder buffs. Pleaaaaase.

For GT+ results, Gellerpox take the lead at 64%, Fellgor at 63%, Kroot 58%, Troupe at 58%, and Vet Guard at 57%. We actually have more teams over-performing here, which is very interesting when looking at Vet Guard and Kroot. With the reverse we have Hunter Clade at 43%, Hand of the Archon at 43%, Pathfinders at 39%, Votann at 31% and Exaction at 29%. Exaction show the consistent trend of struggling at longer events with also an interesting appearance by the Drukhari.

April/May Winrate Chart

Once again here is the above data in chart form!

May 2023 Stats Overview

May has been another interesting month. The majority of the meta is performing healthily. Gellerpox and Troupe continue their months-long streak at the top with Fellgor and Kroot joining them. Votann limp onto the scene while Exaction and Warp Coven continue to under-perform. Once again, it’s a shame we can’t get podium data as it would help make the data more relatable. Still, interesting to see how June shapes up with the Ashes of Faith kill teams and the increased influx of events! Plus maybe a balance dataslate too!

But thanks goes to Hotsauceteddy again who makes all this possible. Without Hotsauceteddy, we’d be nowhere, as well as thanks to everyone’s feedback which has allowed us to shape and improve the stats.

Remember to also check out my Discord as well as my Patreon too if you want to give me some more support!

So until next time, no matter what the stats say, remember you can always win as long as you can roll a crit!
