Playtesting Update

A quick update relating to my status as a playtester for Warhammer Underworlds.Greetings everybody. Today I just wanted to make a quick update about myself. Me and Games Workshop are parting ways so I’m now no longer a playtester for Warhammer Underworlds. This may come as a surprise to a lot of people but I just wanted to make a formal statement here so everyone is aware. As you will know I always preface appropriate reviews and articles with how I attained them as well as my status as a playtester when applicable. This is because honesty is always important to me and I always want people who read my reviews to know whether I got them for free or paid for it with my own money. My status as a playtester was mentioned to show people that while I may be trying to be as impartial as possible, there may still be some subtle biases. This is because I would just feel bad for not being open with my reviews and content as you could argue keeping my playtester status secret could be effecting what content I write/create.So yeah, I’m now no longer a playtester. I don’t plan on mentioning this again so I’ve written this article so people are aware in case they get confused by my old content. Also as for rules questions, remember you can still (and always should) write your questions to Games Workshop via their specific e-mail here: whunderworlds@gwplc.comBefore I sign off I just need to say a few things. Firstly I need to thank Games Workshop. It was always an honour having been chosen to be an external playtester. It wasn’t always fun but I can say for most of the time it was a very positive experience. I don’t want people thinking there’s any ill-will going on, nor will I now turn “anti-GW”. Games Workshop has been very supportive during my time as a playtester and there are too many people to name and thank for all they’ve done for me. I got to do a lot of good things and even worked with my Warhammer Heroes.Next I want to thank my fellow playtesting friends. They are already sick of my praises but I never would have stuck it out without them. They always had my back and kept me motivated even when I thought I was completely burned-out. Most of all, they always kept it fun and were rock-solid for support. Then finally is my gaming club HATE (The Hackney Area Tabletop Enthusiasts). While they were never ever involved in anything related to playtesting at all, their general gaming views and ideals helped shape and improve my own as I have stated numerous times in the past. They helped show me I could still play competitively while making it a fun and positive experience for my opponents. It’s something I always tried to personally stick to as a guiding ideal when playtesting and playing normally. They’re all the gold standard for having the best wargaming experience possible. As for me, I’m back to being “normal” with every other Warhammer Underworlds fan now. Eventually my secret knowledge will run out and I’m finally looking forwards to being surprised again about what’s coming out in the future for the game. Don’t worry, I won’t be going either. Playtesting was nice but it was never my end goal, in fact I almost turned it down at first when I was offered. It’s not something you ever should want, really. My goal was always to chart my competitive progress, help grow the scene and help people get better at Warhammer Underworlds. That won’t change. The only thing is I now have the freedom to write about whatever I want as well as having more free time again. For example I’m really interested in exploring games like: X-Wing, Infinity and Marvel Crisis Protocol. If I really like them, I may even do some content for said games. So what’s next? Just the usual really. I still have regular Warhammer Underworlds content planned, especially relating to the new releases of Morgwaeth’s Blade-Coven and Morgok’s Krushas. Heck, I now have no personal guilt for playing competitively again so I may go back hard into the tournament scene when it’s eventually safe to play again. Even then, the last thing I need to do is thank you. My readers. Again. I never would have gotten as far as I have without all your support and encouragement. If you told me I would have ended up play testing Warhammer Underworlds when I started this blog, I never would have believed you haha. So yes, thank you. Now begins a new Warhammer Underworlds journey for me, no longer cloudy but still with a chance of crits.

  1. As someone who was involved with the Blood Bowl Rules Committee in the early 2000s, I can relate to the grind. Being involved in something you love is a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of work. Now that you’re looking for other games, I suggest you take a look at Super Fantasy Brawl by Mythic Games. Like Warhammer Underworlds, it’s played on a hex grid; unlike Underworlds, it doesn’t use dice, features a shared pool of objectives, and involves “deck-building” only in the sense that choosing your heroes essentially builds your deck, since each hero brings six cards to the mix. So no random rolls to decide games, no dead cards in expansion packs, no power creep, and the rules for assembling a three-member warband in a competitive setting involves picking five heroes, getting one banned, and picking three of the others, so you have to adapt on the fly. I have a feeling it would be right up your alley, as it rewards thinking ahead, strategic placement, and knowing your deck.

Anyway! I’m looking forward to seeing what you get yourself into next. Cheers!
